Zebras

The first group of zebras I saw, descending down the Ngorongoro crater appeared unreal. They looked as if a modern artist took an innocent donkey and used it as a canvas for his latest work. Evolution couldn’t have done a better job of making the most fake looking creatures, and put them in the same place as many other prehistoric looking animals, so us homo-sapiens have one more thing to “ooh and ahh” at when we go on our safaris.

The zebras have a vast majority over the Serengeti. They reproduce annually so we were constantly seeing baby zebras and just a lot of zebras in general. We got to the point in our safari when we just passed a zebra without even acknowledging it, or saying, “There’s another zebra” or “When are we going to see baby leopards?”. Although it would be nice to see baby leopards, the fact that you can see zebras at every corner you turn is pretty awesome.

Is a zebra black with white stripes or white with black stripes? Before our safari guide told me what the answer was, I thought that the question was a joke and it had no right answer. White with black stripes – the reason they have black stripes is so they can absorb sunlight while the white reflects.

I know this might be pretty random, but here’s pretty mind-blowing picture of an albino zebra…we didn’t see this :)

Great post. How far did you all have to drive before you saw zebras? Was it a long daily drive?

Otto, what a great post about zebras! We felt the same way on our safari…..so many zebras that we bacame *almost* indifferent about seeing them. The babies were a little difficult for me not to yell “stop” for though! I was happy they were so plentiful because they are just plain cool to look at, very pleasing to the eye (plus they remind me a bit of horses, which I love)! We had many discussions about what it would be like to tame and ride a zebra :)

Great post Otto. I thought the zebras were especially exciting because it was the first large animal we saw.
