Sagrada Família

I’ve had my share of churches and cathedrals in the past two months, but none could possibly compare to Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia. Gaudi’s key to fame, was also a key to a whole different type of architecture. His influence on city and the world was a catalyst to Barcelona’s amazing art and modern buildings. The Sagrada Familia sprang Barcelona’s love for art. Now every turn you make you see an astonishing sculpture or a miraculous building.

The Sagrada Familia is out of this world. As I walk into this extraterrestrial building I was blown away. The stain glass windows fill the room with color. Columns scattered around the room standing like tree trunks with branches going in all directions. I felt as if I was abducted by aliens and was taken to their launch station. After Florence what I was used to was a painting on the ceiling, but this time Gaudi left the canvas blank, though the ceiling was the coolest part. Holes lined the ceiling looking like gears in a factory. I don’t know what kind of vision Gaudi had, but it was simply out of this world.

One of the coolest parts of the Sagrada Familia is that it’s not done! Although the building is up and running, this building isn’t even half finished. The project was started in 1883 and to this day it is being built. We could hear the saws, drills and stone cutting going on as we walked around. Gaudi knew that this project would take past lifetime, saying that his client was in no rush (his client being God). In that matter some think that Gaudi left future architectural decisions for future generations, and some think that it is more important to copy his exact vision. Their shooting for 2026 (100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death) to finish (you have to see this video) so keep your fingers crossed!

Gaudi has left a great impact on architecture, art, Barcelona, and the world. He inspired many and left a great project to be finished.

Great entry Otto. I have heard people talk about this project but your description and video made it more clear why everyone is astonished by the architecture.

All I can say is “WOW!” Thanks, Otto, for putting the video on the blog. Watching the cathedral “grow” to its finish was really cool.

I went to Barcelona for the first time two years ago and spent an afternoon at this church and your description is dead on. I tell people all the time there is no other church in the world like it – it is amazing.

Otto, I’ve been wondering how I was going to describe the Sagrada Familia. Now I’ll just have them read your post! What a great guided tour.
